You know when you have one of those weeks where you get knocked down, and get back up again, only to be knocked down again? Well that was me last week. You know, it was one of those weeks.

On Monday I woke up with the flu, yet had to work from bed. With a fever I had to deliver an all-day personal branding training program to top level executives. I ran into an ex-boyfriend – you know, the one you never want to see again. I fell over (spectacularly) in the middle of a major intersection. I could go on, but you get the picture.

So how do you not only get through those weeks, but learn from them? Here are my thoughts.

You do what you need to do
As a leader and business owner, I have to show up. It’s as simple as that. If I didn’t turn up to run that personal branding training day I would have let a room full of people down. But more importantly, I have a reputation of being a great presenter who always delivers. It is a hard-won reputation, and I will continue to do what it takes to maintain it.

Sometimes it’s OK not to get back up
Seriously, it’s OK to stay down. Oh, it is so OK to sit on the couch and eat Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream and watch a Sandra Bullock movie. But understand that you are licking your wounds before you get back out there.

Learn from the experiences
So what can you learn from getting knocked down? I do a million things, I work really hard, I love catching up with friends…and sometimes I don’t have enough down time. Then I get sick. And then I have to keep working even though I’m sick. That’s my lesson from last week – remember to slow down.

This too shall pass
Most things we experience are transitory. Bad weeks pass. They really do. So do good weeks. What’s important is how we approach our lives and that we catch a glimpse of the important things each day.
